Its unusual properties have been confirmed in wound models, where they have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to rapidly control major arterial bleeding (without cautery) from traumatic wounds. The granular presentation provides a simple and quick way to control bleeding and is particularly useful in treating difficult and deep wounds.
A clot forms within minutes after pouring Sam-Celox into the wound. Excess granules form a gelled mass to protect the clot. The gelled material is easy to remove. Sam-Celox is extremely effective as it works in hypothermic conditions and works regardless of the blood temperature which could be 37.5˚c or 18.5˚c.
Sam-Celox also works on heparinised blood as it functions independently of the blood clotting agent. This treatment is safe and easy to use as no heat is generated, resulting in no burning or damage to the wound. This product is easily and hygienically stored in sterile, waterproof and easy to remove packaging that has no special storage requirements. Sam-Celox granules are lightweight and packaged in sterilised, sealed packets which are easy to use and fast to open.
Sam-Celox is poured into the wound and should be held down with gauze for five minutes. A compression bandage should be wrapped over the gauze covered wound before the patient is transported. Only a single dose is required.
